The MK 4 / CCM 4 rejection of rear-incident sound has been optimized. As with any conventional cardioid microphone, the attenuation of lateral sound with an angle of incidence smaller than 90 ° reaches 6 dB, and reaches - depending on frequency and distance - 30 dB for rear-incident sound. The diffused incident sound is restored with 4.8 dB less than the direct incident sound, a number which corresponds to the directivity index. The higher this index, the lower the microphone records ambient sounds and, therefore, the less it is sensitive to Larsen audio feedback.

For an equal direct/reverb sound balance, and with the same sensitivity sensor, the pick-up pattern of this microphone allows it to be installed 1.7 times farther from the sound source. Even in the diffuse field, that is to say far away from the sound source, its frequency response curve stays linear, showing only a mild rise around 10 kHz.

Its sonic image is characterized by an exceptional conservation of sound color. The MK 4 / CCM 4 is suited for vocals and instruments, hence its use with an ORTF microphone (MSTC 64 Ug, STCG). Used in an XY pair or on channel M during MS recording, it gives remarkable results.
