The MK 4 is our best-selling capsule. It offers the highest sound quality, flat frequency response, optimal rejection of rear-incident sound, and a directional pattern that remains constant throughout the audio frequency range. In the diffuse sound field it shows only a mild rise around 10 kHz; the sonic impression thus remains free of coloration even when sound is arriving from all sides at once. The sonic impression is thus free of coloration whether sound is arriving at the front or at the sides of the microphone, as well as for diffuse sound (reverberation) in a room.

Insensitivity to rear-incident sound of the MK4 has been optimized. As for a conventional cardioid, attenuation of incident sound at 90 ° is equal to 6 dB, and that of the rear sound is between 20 and 30 dB. The diffused incident sound is restored with 4.8 dB less than the direct incident sound, a number which corresponds to the directivity index (see bottom of p. 21). The higher this index, the lower the microphone records the "atmosphere" sound and the less it is sensitive to Larsen (audio feedback).
At equal reverberation, the MK 4 can be placed about 1.7 times farther from the source that a likeminded pressure sensor.

The MK4 suits the vocals as the musical outlet. It is often used as well as supporting microphone than studio microphone or during stereo editing. The ORTF stereo microphone (MSTC 64 Ug, STCG) has this capsule. Used in an XY pair or as a central microphone in MS editing, it gives remarkable results.
